South Park: The Fractured But Whole receives release date

South Park: The Fractured But Whole has received a new release date, after the game was delayed numerous times by publishing studio Ubisoft.

The sequel to the successful South Park: The Stick of Truth is set to release on Oct. 17, 2017, nearly ten months after the initial release date following it’s E3 reveal in 2016. Like its predecessor, The Fractured But Whole has been delayed several times.

Three months after the game’s announcement, Ubisoft said that the game would be delayed from its Dec. 6 release to the first quarter of 2017. In February, the game was delayed again without a concrete release date. These delays led to many digital preorders being canceled on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Fractured But Whole picks up shortly after where The Stick of Truth left off, where the player continues to role-play as the towns new kid from the previous game. Although you are crowned king at the end of the game, once the boys decide that they want to pivot from fantasy to superheroes, you are back at the bottom of the pecking order.

Like how The Stick of Truth related to the console wars trilogy based loosely on HBO’s Game of Thrones, the game will follow along to a similar setting from the television series. The Fractured But Whole parallels the Coon and Friend’s story arc, during which Cartman has organized his own version of Marvel’s Avengers with the purpose of making lots of money off of a superhero media franchise.

But when some of the boys think that they aren’t going to get enough screen time, they decide that it’s time for a civil war, and the boys split into warring franchises, much like Marvel and D.C. today.

From gameplay trailers, the game is improving on the turn-based combat from the previous game by adding movement. The game also features the crude humor the television series has been both praised and vilified for, and continues to deliver fart jokes in the same way that The Stick of Truth did.

The game will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Preorder bonuses include a free digital copy of The Stick of Truth and Towelie bonus content for The Fractured But Whole.
